In 1989, Thomas Monaghan underwent a spiritual crisis, in which many things in his life is redefined. In 1992, he sold his shares of the “Tigers of Detroit” and other businesses.

In the early 90s, he builds a mission in a village in Honduras and supervised the construction of the new cathedral in Managua, Nicaragua after the old cathedral was destroyed in the 1972 earthquake.

Tom Monaghan (businessperson and philanthropist, Michigan, the United States, 1937) founded Domino Pizza in 1960. In 1998, he sold his shares of the company to engage in philanthropy and politics.

Monaghan is a Catholic Christian with a particular interest in pro-life causes. Monaghan publicly promotes attendance at daily Mass, daily recitation of rosary and frequent Sacramental confession. He is a member of the Opus Dei.

In 1983, he established the Mater Christi Foundation, today known as the Ave Maria Foundation, to focus on Catholic education, Catholic media, community projects and other Catholic Charities.

Thomas Monaghan donated 250 million dollars for creation of Ave Maria University.

In 1987, Tom Monaghan helped to create Legatus, an organization for Catholic CEOs of enterprises that earn more than 4 million dollars per year with the purpose of promoting and supporting:

“The moral ethics in business in accordance with teachings of Roman Catholic Church.”
