The Guinean historian Djibril Tamsir Niane (Conakry, 9 January 1933) specializes in the History of Africa and Oral Tradition transmission in West Africa. He was the author of the “Epic of Sundiata.”

Djibril Tamsir Niane was the editor of Volume IV (Africa from 12th to 16th Century) and author in Volume VIII (Africa since 1935. The Independence of African Countries) of the History of Africa.

The Top Model and activist Katoucha Niane (1960 –2008) was the daughter of Djibril Tamsir Niane. When Katoucha Niane was nine years old, Djibril Niane consented to her sexual mutilation. She wrote her autobiography (In My Flesh) explaining her suffering. She founded the organization “Katoucha for the battle against female circumcision.”
