Chile-Panama Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

The Chile-Panama Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force in 2008.

The main objective of the Chile-Panama Free Trade Agreement is the creation of a free-trade area.

The specific aims of the Chile-Panama Free Trade Agreement are to:

  1. Promote the international trade expansion and diversification between Chile and Panama
  2. Remove the Technical Barriers to Trade and facilitate the cross-border movement of the export products and services between Chile and Panama
  3. Promote a fair competition conditions in the free-trade area
  4. Increase the foreign direct investment opportunities in Chile and Panama
  5. Create an efficient procedures for the implementation and enforcement of this agreement

The Chile-Panama Free Trade Agreement (FTA) establishes that Chile granted a tariff reduction on 92% of the exports products covered by the Chile-Panama Free Trade Agreement and that those export products could enter duty free from the first day of the Agreement.

Foreign Trade between Chile and Panama

  1. International Trade between Panama and Chile has been negative from the perspective of the economy of Panama
  2. Over the past five years, the value of the deficit has augmented by 60%. However, the participation of Panama in the foreign trade with Chile augmented considerably from 3% to 19% in the same period
  3. Exports: 4 million dollars
  4. Imports from Chile: 32 million dollars
  5. Top exports from Panama to Chile are baby foods, plastic products, textiles, kitchen products, and copper
