A INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON DISTANCE EDUCATION é uma organização não lucrativa
criada em Genebra (Suíça) em 1997 com o objetivo de promover e melhorar a
educação a distância. Desde 2003, dispõe do estatuto consultivo, categoria
especial, do Conselho Econômico e Social das NAÇÕES UNIDAS
A organização controla a qualidade dos cursos daquelas instituições que os
submetem voluntariamente a verificação. Está dirigida a todas as instituições
acadêmicas que desenvolvem educação a distância em qualquer de suas modalidades
e níveis, assim como aos alunos que se interessam por esta nova forma de
educação.
Entre os principais objetivos da organização destaca a promoção da educação nos
países em vias de desenvolvimento e a busca de bolsas de estudos para os alunos
dos países não desenvolvidos que possam demonstrar níveis de renda baixos. Cada
instituição membro de CODE ou submetida a auditoria de qualidade está obrigada a
oferecer duas bolsas de estudos ao ano por cada curso auditado, dirigidas a
estudantes de país em desenvolvimento.
CODE se estabelece desde cinco grandes centros regionais distribuídos nos cinco
continentes e está representada em todas as sedes de Nações Unidas através de
delegados que transladam ao Conselho Econômico e Social das Nações Unidas as
inquietações do setor e trasmiten os programas dirigidos à melhora da educação e
à redução da brecha tecnológica com os países mais desfavorecidos.
EENI pertence à comissão desde 2003.

INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON DISTANCE EDUCATION is a non-profit
organisation established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1997 to promote and develop
distance education programmes. Since 2003 the Commission holds consultative
status, special category, with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of
United Nations. Its Honorary President and Founder has been Prof. Dr. Ilya
Prigogine, Nobel Prize for Chemistry, until his recent death.
The Commission offers a scheme of quality assessment audits to those member
institutions that choose to join the scheme. It is open to all academic
institutions that offer any form of distance taught programmes and at all levels.
It is also open to students who choose to pursue distance learning.
Among the main objectives of the organization are the promotion of distance
education programmes in emerging countries and the creation of a scholarship
fund for students with demonstrable low levels of income in underdeveloped
countries. Each member institution of CODE and all institutions that join the
quality assessment scheme are required to offer two scholarships annually for
each course audited. These scholarships are to be offered to students in
emerging and undeveloped countries.
CODE is established in five regional centres across the five continents. It
is represented in all the offices of United Nations through delegates who inform
the Economic and Social Council of the concerns of the sector and keep track of
programmes designed to enhance education levels and to reduce the technological
deficit of the least favoured countries.
